Is wisdom tooth surgery fully covered by MediSave?

Reviewed by Dr Samuel Ong Jien Woon, BDS (Singapore), Clinic DirectorLast reviewed 4 November 2026General information, not a diagnosis
Short answer: Surgical removal of an impacted wisdom tooth is a MediSave-claimable procedure. At Toothsmith, the all-inclusive surgical fee of $1,362.50 for one tooth or $2,343.50 for two in one sitting is 100% MediSave-claimable, so there is no cash payment as long as the MediSave account used has enough balance. You may still pay cash for a simple (non-surgical) extraction, which is not MediSave-claimable, or if the account balance is not enough.

What MediSave covers for wisdom teeth

MediSave can be used for dental procedures that involve surgery and are done for medical reasons, at a MediSave-accredited clinic. Surgical removal of an impacted wisdom tooth qualifies. The amount that can be withdrawn is set by the CPF Board for each procedure; if a clinic’s fee is above those limits, the difference is paid in cash.

Surgical removal, one tooth$1,362.50100% claimable, subject to available balance
Surgical removal, two teeth in one sitting$2,343.50100% claimable, subject to available balance

The surgical fee includes the pre-operative X-rays, imaging during surgery, the surgery itself, medication and the post-operative review.

When you might still pay cash

  • The tooth only needs a simple extraction. Whether removal is simple or surgical is decided on the X-ray and examination.
  • The MediSave balance is not enough. Any shortfall is paid in cash, NETS or card on the day.
  • A separate first consultation. If you come for an assessment and X-ray on an earlier day, before surgery is planned, that visit is charged separately; the fee is told to you in advance.
  • You are not a CPF member and have no eligible family member’s MediSave to use.

Can I use my parent’s or spouse’s MediSave?

Yes. MediSave can be used for approved dependants: your spouse, children, parents, grandparents and siblings (siblings must be Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents). The account holder signs a Medical Claims Authorisation Form, which we provide.

What to bring on the day

  • Your NRIC
  • If a family member’s MediSave is being used: their NRIC, a screenshot of their MediSave balance from the CPF app or website, and the signed authorisation form
  • A list of your medications and medical conditions

We submit the claim electronically after the procedure. The deduction appears in the account holder’s CPF statement.

Is it covered by CHAS?

Surgical removal is not a CHAS procedure. A simple extraction of an erupted wisdom tooth is claimable as a CHAS back-tooth extraction. See what CHAS covers at the dentist.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay anything upfront for wisdom tooth surgery?

At Toothsmith the surgical fee is 100% MediSave-claimable, so no cash is needed on the day if the MediSave account used has enough balance. We confirm the claim position before surgery.

Can foreigners use MediSave for wisdom tooth surgery?

MediSave is part of CPF, so only CPF members can use it, for themselves or approved family members. Patients without MediSave pay the fee directly; some company insurance plans cover wisdom tooth surgery, so check your policy.

Is a simple wisdom tooth extraction claimable under MediSave?

No. Only surgical removal is MediSave-claimable. A simple extraction is CHAS-claimable for eligible cardholders.

How do I check my MediSave balance?

Log in to the CPF website or app with Singpass. If a family member’s account is being used, ask them for a screenshot of their balance.
