How much does a dental check-up and scaling cost in Singapore?
MOH fee benchmarks for a routine visit
| Item | MOH benchmark (before GST) |
|---|---|
| Consultation | $21 – $31 |
| Scaling | $35 – $60 |
| Polishing | $26 – $38 |
| Topical fluoride | $21 – $31 |
| X-ray, small (periapical or bitewing) | $16 – $33 |
| X-ray, full mouth (OPG) | $65 – $104 |
The benchmarks are MOH’s reference range for routine, typical cases in private primary-care dental clinics. Actual fees vary with your condition; heavy tartar or gum disease, for example, takes longer to treat. CHAS dental clinics display these benchmarks beside their price list.

How often do I need scaling?
For most adults, every 6 to 12 months. Your dentist may suggest more often if you have gum disease, build up tartar quickly, wear braces, have a dry mouth, smoke or have diabetes. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing, and it is what keeps gums inflamed and bleeding. See why gums bleed when you brush.
What happens at a check-up
- The dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth.
- X-rays are taken only if there is a reason, such as checking between teeth or a problematic tooth.
- Scaling removes tartar above and just below the gum line; polishing removes stains.
- You are told what was found, what needs treatment if anything, and the fee and subsidy before you decide.
At Toothsmith
Fees for check-ups, scaling and polishing are quoted before treatment, and the MOH benchmarks are displayed at the clinic. CHAS, Merdeka and Pioneer Generation subsidies are deducted at the counter, and you receive an itemised bill. See check-ups and general dentistry.
Frequently asked questions
Why do scaling prices vary so much?
The time needed depends on how much tartar there is and the state of your gums. Prices also include GST or not; MOH’s benchmarks are before GST.
Is scaling and polishing covered by CHAS?
Yes, for CHAS Blue, CHAS Orange, Merdeka Generation and Pioneer Generation cardholders, up to twice each per calendar year.
Does scaling damage teeth?
No. Scaling removes hardened deposits; it does not remove enamel. Teeth may feel sensitive for a few days, especially where gums were inflamed.
Do I need X-rays at every check-up?
No. X-rays are taken when there is a clinical reason, such as checking for decay between teeth or investigating a symptom. See dental X-rays.
